History of Red Wing Basketball
The Goodhue County History Center will be hosting a program by Marc Hugunin, co-author of Minnesota Hoops: Basketball in the North Star State, on the history of basketball in Red Wing. The program will be held on Monday, March 26, at 7:00 p.m. at the History Center at 1166 Oak Street. The program is free.
Marc Hugunin, co-author of Minnesota Hoops, re-lives the early days of basketball in Red Wing, from 1896 through 1933. This was a time, according to Minnesota Hoops, when Red Wing was “Minnesota’s leading hotbed of basketball action, the one place (in Minnesota) where the game was embraced with Hoosier-like enthusiasm.” You will learn how basketball came to Red Wing, and why the city’s teams enjoyed such great success; and you’ll meet the pioneers as well as the superstars of this golden age of Red Wing basketball. |
